The ramen restaurant that has been under construction at 47-36 Vernon Boulevard in recent months opened yesterday.
The restaurant, called Tamashii Ramen, is owned by Jhon Cho, who has operated a restaurant by the same name at 29-05 Broadway in Astoria for the past two years.
The Long Island City version will offer the same menu as the Astoria location. (click for menu)
The Vernon Blvd restaurant has room for about 25 diners. While small, it does deliver. (718-472-2142)
Cho said he will be running the Vernon Blvd location and that he has an employee who will manage the Astoria restaurant.
Cho said that the most popular dishes at his restaurants are Champon (spicy seafood noodle soup, $12.95), Veggie Champon ($12.95) and Tamashii ramen (ramen flavored with pork and seafood, $10.95).
He said that the basic ingredients are Japanese, although they are mixed with Korean spices.
Cho, a Korean national, has been in the US for 16 years and has worked or owned restaurants since. His father is Japanese while his mother is Korean. His mother operated a restaurant in Korea for more than 30 years, he said.
Cho said that he decided to open a Vernon Blvd restaurant since there was a lot of demand from Long Island City residents for his food.
He said many Long Island City residents used to call his Astoria location hoping to place an order. However, he said, it was too far away for his staff to make deliveries.
