Sunnyside Post Mile Takes Place Sunday, 400 Participants Expected

Mile

May 29, 2015 By Christian Murray

The Sunnyside Post Mile kicks off Sunday with more than 400 participants expected to run/walk to help raise funds for the Coalition for the Homeless.

Leonor White, the event organizer, said the goal is to raise about $7,000, which would help the Coalition provide food, shelter and job-training services for those most in need.

White said that many local businesses have been generous in sponsoring the event and that with strong participation on Sunday the $7,000 goal should be met.

To date, 300 people have registered online (click here to sign up). However, people are still able to sign up on the day.

The participation fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children ($15 for adults who sign up on the day). All runners/walkers will get an event T-Shirt.

The event starts outside Lou Lodati Park on 43rd Street at 10 am and registration and bib/T-Shirt pickup is open from 9:15 to 10:00 am.

The mile goes from the park down to Barnett Avenue through to 50th Street before finishing at Skillman Ave/44th Street. The roads will be closed for the event.

Several bars and restaurants will be offering discounts on the day to participants wearing Sunnyside Post Mile T-shirts.

Those establishments are the Dog & Duck, Claret Wine Bar, Bar 43, Maggie Mae’s, Quaint and Murphy’s Lobster Grill.

The event has been sponsored by a host of local businesses—such as Sunnyside Post, Bar 43, Dog and Duck, Merit Real Estate, Welcome Home Real Estate, The Skillman Project and Coffeed (see full list below).

“These sponsors have made the event happen,” White said. “I’m very, very grateful.”

The event will begin with introductions from Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, State Sen. Mike Gianaris and Community Board 2 Chair Pat O’Brien. A representative from the Coalition for the Homeless will also be in attendance.

The adult competitive race will start at 10:30 am, with the youth competitive race beginning at 10:45. The run/walk for the general population starts 11:00 am. The event will take place rain or shine.

A medal ceremony will be held at 11:30 near the finishing line.
