Man shot and killed by off-duty corrections officer in Jamaica

By Bill Parry

An alleged gunman was shot and killed by an off-duty New York State Corrections Officer late Saturday night in Jamaica, according to the NYPD. Officers from the 102nd Precinct in Richmond Hill responded to reports of a robbery in front of 82-10 Rockaway Blvd. around 10:30 p.m. when they discovered an unidentified male who was unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say the alleged armed robber brandished a gun at the corrections officer and four other men and demanded the keys to their motorcycles. A scuffle ensued, an NYPD spokesman said, and the officer shot the 35-year-old man in the head.

The man was in cardiac arrest when EMS arrived. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Police found what they believe to be the dead man’s gun at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and the identification of the deceased is pending family notification.
