After enduring nearly two months without gas or hot water, tenants of the Acropolis Gardens will get some attention from Public Advocate Letitia James on Monday.
James will join Councilman Costa Constantinides for a rally outside the Acropolis apartments, which span Ditmars Boulevard to 21st Avenue between 33rd and 35th Streets. They will meet at Ditmars Boulevard and 33rd Street at 11:00 am.
The rally is in response to the weeks-long gas shutoff in half of the Acropolis’ 16 buildings, first reported by DNAInfo. James and Constantinides will call on the Acropolis’ management company, Metropolitan Pacific Properties, to prioritize building repairs necessary for gas to be restored.
“We have been working with all relevant City agencies to restore service but have been stalled by the management company,” Constantinides wrote on his Facebook page.
According to spokesperson Sidney Alvarez, Con Edison discovered “inadequacies” with the Acropolis’ piping in April, and subsequently shut off gas until system repairs could be made.
However, Steve Osman of Metropolitan Pacific Properties insisted that “this was an error on Con Ed’s part.”
“There’s no gas leak here, there’s no odor or gas,” he continued. “Nothing’s wrong with the system.”
Osman said management is currently busy testing lines and installing new gas meters, as instructed by Con Edison.
According to Department of Buildings documents, several Acropolis buildings have outstanding violations, including a handful of gas- and piping-related issues over the past three months.
Seven of the Acropolis Gardens buildings remain without gas; 21-48 35th Street was restored last week, according to Alvarez.
