Neighbors and shoppers along Steinway Street have access to free public WiFi starting this summer.
According to Marie Torniali, director of the Steinway Astoria Partnership, the network is up and running between 28th Avenue and Broadway, with an expansion to 35th Avenue planned over the next few months.
The Steinway Astoria Partnership is a Business Improvement District covering Steinway Street from 28th Avenue to 35th Avenue. Funding for the WiFi network came entirely from the BID.
The WiFi launch was first reported by the Queens Gazette.
“I think the progressive business districts know that there’s a need for [WiFi] to accommodate our shoppers and our visitors,” Torniali said. “We’re providing a service to the customer which makes Steinway a more user friendly business district.”
Torniali said that the network is a component of a new project to install surveillance cameras along the BID corridor.
To log on, users select the network “Steinway Public.” There is no password needed.
