The Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District has installed fifteen new trash cans on the sidewalks of Queens Boulevard and Greenpoint Avenue.
The new trash receptacles replace broken cans that no longer closed or locked.
The new receptacles were installed over the weekend, with the broken cans hauled away by the NYC Department of Sanitation.
The new cans are much bigger and sturdier that the old cans and are made of fabricated steel and painted black. The receptacles are serviced daily by the Sunnyside Shines maintenance team.
Five trash cans have been placed on Greenpoint Avenue at 46th and 47th Streets. Ten have been installed on Queens Blvd at the intersections of 39th Street; 40th Street; 42nd Street, 43rd Street, 45th Street, 46th Street and 47th Street.
The project was fully funded by taxpayers, via an allocation by Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer.
“We thank Majority Leader Van Bramer for his dedication to beautifying Sunnyside’s commercial district,” said Sunnyside Shines executive director Rachel Thieme.
“These trash receptacles are a big upgrade for the district and provide a more functional and attractive option to manage trash collection on our busy streets.”
