A local bar is set to transform its basement into a part-time comedy club.
Maggie Mae’s, located at 41-15 Queens Blvd, will be teaming up with Sunnyside Comedy to host a weekly comedy show each Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
Sunnyside Comedy, which formed last year as a means to bring quality comedy to this neighborhood, had been hosting shows at The Dog and Duck and Marlene’s Tavern since its inception.
The comics will now be using Maggie Mae’s as their home base.
“We picked Maggie Mae’s because they have a beautiful space downstairs and just finished renovating the whole bar,“ said Lindsay Goldwert, co-producer of Sunnyside Comedy. “It is a great location that is convenient to get to and located right by the train.”
Maggie Mae’s co-owner James Moore said he is glad the comics are coming.
“We have the space and want to utilize it,” Moore said.
The performers will vary every week, with tonight’s show being headlined by Nick Vatterott, who has appeared on Comedy Central, Conan and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
“Many of the comics will be from Queens,” Goldwert said. “We want to show people that Western Queens is where comedy lives.”
Each show will be about 90 minutes.
The cost of admission is $5 and there will be a two-drink minimum at happy hour prices.
“It is reasonably priced, but helps support the bar,” Goldwert said. “People are very excited for the show and we are really excited to bring it to Queens.”
