Traffic signals under the Astoria Boulevard elevated subway stop were stuck blinking red and yellow for several hours Tuesday, causing driver confusion.
Along 31st Street, at the intersection with Astoria Boulevard, lights were blinking red indefinitely. For Astoria Boulevard traffic, lights blinked yellow.
Drivers honked in frustration and cautiously took turns moving through the intersection.
This intersection lies just under a notoriously confusing corridor that recently received a safety redesign from the DOT.
Detective Edwin Negron of the 114 Precinct said that the precinct reported signaling problems to the DOT at 3:15 p.m.
The 114 sent an officer to the intersection to help expedite traffic at roughly 3:30, who will stay until the signaling is repaired, according to Negron.
The traffic lights were repaired, according to the DOT later in the day. The department said it is looking into the cause of the temporary malfunction and will correct the situation.
