Brooklyn teacher ordered to do community service after drone accident

By Madina Toure

A Brooklyn teacher who launched a drone that malfunctioned and crashed into an empty section of seats in the Louis Armstrong Stadium last month during a US Open match has been ordered to perform community service, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown announced last week.

Verley appeared Oct. 2 before Queens Criminal Court Judge Michelle Armstrong and was ordered to perform five days of community service, Brown said.

If he completes his community service, which will be performed under the supervision of the District Attorney’s Alternative Sentencing Program, and abides by the law, the charges against him will be dismissed in six months.

His lawyer, D. Andrew Marshall, said that Verley will be doing his community service at a charter school.

“He believes that it was a just outcome and more importantly, the students where he will be working and tutoring and offering his services will also benefit from his passion and commitment that he will be bringing to that experience,” Marshall said.
