Ethel Plimack, a Sunnyside Gardens resident, celebrated her 105th birthday today and local residents gathered outside her 46th Street home to wish her a Happy Birthday on Thanksgiving Day.
At noon, Ethel’s neighbor Patricia Dorfman knocked on her front door to wish her Happy Birthday. When Ethel came out of her home, accompanied by a friend, about 100 people cheered.
The mob sang Happy Birthday and Ethel expressed her gratitude with a broad smile.
Several children went up to her with flowers and wished her Happy Birthday.
“Thank you. Thank you. It’s a wonderful day,” Ethel said. “ All these neighbors [here] to celebrate my birthday.”
Dorfman, the organizer, said that the occasion was particularly touching. This was the third time she had organized the event– the first time being when Ethel turned 103.
Ethel has lived a full and active life, her children told the Sunnyside Post last year.
Plimack worked as an administrative assistant until she was 94, taking the subway to Marymount Manhattan College every day. She also swam at Equinox until she was 100.
Plimack is part of a longevity study at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine that revealed good genes, a wide social network and active lifestyle helped her to age so long and so well.
“We can only marvel at her extraordinary memory and continuing good health,” her daughter, Janet Sherman, said last year. “She is certainly a remarkable woman.”
