After defeating a tough ninth-ranked Sullivan County Community College squad 66-54 at home on Jan. 16, the LaGuardia Community College (LAGCC) Lady Red Hawks continued their strong Region XV play when they traveled to Long Island on Jan. 19 and beat the Nassau Community College Lions by a score of 74-57, ending Nassau’s five-game winning streak.
LAGCC came out strong against Nassau, outscoring the Lions in all four quarters of the game, en route to the 17-point victory.
The Lady Red Hawks did a good job spreading the scoring around, with four players reaching double-digits point totals. Freshman Briana Johnson led the way with 17 points and took the only four LAGCC 3-point attempts on the night, hitting two of the shots.
Marika Gordon had another double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. The Lady Red Hawks’ bench went an impressive 15-for-29 from the field and contributed 33 points in the victory. Jazznita Williams had 10 points, while Janae Gibson added 8 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
The Lady Red Hawks are now 14-4 on the season and improved their Region XV record to 12-1.
The Red Hawks will prepare to face the Bronx Broncos on Thursday, Jan. 21, at home. LAGCC defeated Bronx 67-62 earlier this year and will look to complete the season sweep of the team that ousted them from last year’s CUNY Athletic Conference tournament.
