A new herbal shop offering meditation, facials and a holistic spa opened recently in Long Island City.
SacredWaters, located in the former elska space at 5-35 51st Ave., opened its doors to the public late December, according to owner Jennifer Cogburn.
The shop will soon be offering free community meditation classes every morning. Other community classes will include a soap making class, a class on aromatherapy, as well as a class on herbal products, Cogburn said.
SacredWaters will also offer European facials by TailorMadeForYou, as well as past life regression, which is a technique believed to recover memories from a past life. Another treatment option they will offer is sensory deprivation, which is achieved by floating in Epsom salt water that is kept at body temperature, in a dark and sound-proof room.
“The sensation is like floating in outer space,” Cogburn said. “You feel gravity-less.”
She said this is a great meditation that relaxes both the mind and body.
Cogburn is in the process of gaining the proper licenses to offer all of these services and classes. She expects the shop to be fully operational by its grand opening on Feb. 6.
SacredWaters will also offer products such as the shop’s own line of organic essential oils, as well as herbal extracts, soaps, candles, jewelry and gemstones.
Cogburn said she saw a need for these services in Long Island City and quickly decided she wanted to open her own shop. She spent two years searching for a location in the neighborhood.
She said she previously lived in the 51st Avenue building, so when the space became available, she decided to jump on it.
Cogburn hopes her shop will help bring the community together.
“I love how community-based Long Island City is,” she said. “I want to create our own supportive community at the shop.”
Cogburn said numerous residents have stopped by to check out the shop since it opened in December.
“There has been a lot of excitement from those who have stopped by,” she said. “There is nothing else like this in the neighborhood.”
She expects the excitement around the shop to increase following the February grand opening.
