Developers plan to stack two stories of apartments on top of the Broadway building currently occupied by the Chicken Shack.
Construction plans were filed Tuesday with the Department of Buildings for the enlargement of 36-19 Broadway, which would transform the two-story commercial building into a four-story retail and residential building.
According to the building plans, retail will remain on the first floor, while the second, third and fourth floors will hold two apartments each.
These development plans come on the heels of a fire that struck the Chicken Shack and its adjacent tenants – Jewels of Buddha handcrafts, Tone Pilates Studio and Winegasm Bar and Eatery – last October.
According to the FDNY, it was deemed to be an accidental electrical fire.
Chicken Shack and Winegasm reopened for business after the fire. Jewels of Buddha announced its closure in January on Facebook, citing major renovations.
Tone Pilates moved to 32-12 Broadway after the fire. Owner Jessica Hope said that the studio, which was on the second floor, was not brought back as a tenant after the fire.
The property owner, Phillips Brokerage, did not respond to requests for comment on this story.
