Police close off 54th Street between Roosevelt and Skillman Avenues

A 34-year-old man who was struck repeatedly in the head with a metal pipe in Woodside early Saturday has died and the police have arrested and charged the alleged perpetrator.

The incident took place at 1:45 a.m. Saturday when police received a call that men were fighting near Roosevelt Avenue and 54th Street.

When police arrived, Martin Quiej was found lying on the ground with lacerations to his head at 41-24 54th St. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Quiej, who lived on 54th Street in Woodside, died Tuesday succumbing to his injuries.

The police recovered the pipe on the scene.

The police arrested Victor Mendoza, a 21-year-old Woodside resident, on the scene for the attack. He was charged on March 6, prior to Quiej’s death, with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The police are trying to locate another man allegedly involved who was described as a Hispanic male, wearing blue jeans, black shoes and a gray jacket.
