Borough President Melinda Katz announced $13 million in discretionary capital funds will be allocated toward improving nine public library branches in Queens.
Some branches are scheduled for expansion, while others will receive renovations to their interiors. Upgrades to systems which add comfort and ease to library-goers’ experience will come in the form of better HVAC systems and self-check-in.
“Queens Library’s locations serve as centers of lifelong learning and enrichment,” Katz said last week. “These are substantial investments for not only renovations, expansions and enhancements, but also for the families of Queens. These funds are designed to help Queens Library continue to be a first-class library system of learning, literacy and culture.”
The allocations include $3.5 million to go toward an exterior expansion and $92,000 for security cameras at Baisley Park; $3 million for an expansion of the library at East Elmhurst; $3 million for an interior expansion to South Hollis; $600,000 for new windows and doors at the Forest Hills branch; $500,000 for a upgraded HVAC system at Pomonok; $400,000 for the initial outfitting at North Forest Park; $385,000 for the installation of an exterior self-check-in at the branch in Queens Village and $97,000 for a security system at the Laurelton branch.
In May, Katz and Councilman Paul Vallone (D-Bayside) announced that the library in Bay Terrace was to receive $1.4 million for interior renovations, on top of the $1.48 million allocated by Vallone. This funding is part of the $13 million allocated in FY 2017 .
“This capital funding will help us move key library projects forward, so the community has expanded, updated facilities for reading and learning,” Dennis Walcott, Queens Library President and CEO said.
