The Department of Transportation will present its plan for the reconstruction of a slew of streets in Hunters Point and Court Square at a community meeting next week.
The agency’s “Street Safety and Design Open House” will take place June 20, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at P.S./I.S. 78 (46-08 5th St.).
The DOT is proposing to enhance safety and the pedestrian environment in the community by reconstructing the streets from 44th Drive to Borden Avenue and Jackson Avenue to 5th Street, a spokesman said.
Project funding comes from $29.6 million that were dedicated to Long Island City improvements, out of $115 million Mayor Bill de Blasio allocated for Vision Zero in the City. Prior to this allocation, DOT had dedicated $8.8 million, so a total of $38.47 million will go towards the LIC/Hunters Point area, according to the DOT.
A community workshop was held last December for neighbors to help the City identify existing safety issues in the project area and brainstorm potential solutions.
“We encourage residents of the area and the media to attend [the June 20 meeting] as the project team will be on hand to describe how the designs address the feedback and comments the agency received at the public workshop held in December 2015 and various presentations to the community since,” the spokesman said.
The meeting will be hosted along with Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and Community Board 2.
