A new elementary school, P.S. 335, is set to open in Centerville at the beginning of the 2017 academic year for students in Ozone Park.
To be built at the corner of Albert Road and Raleigh Street, the new school will hopefully help to alleviate the overcrowding in nearby schools by giving Ozone Park students a school for themselves, said state Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr.
“As I visit schools throughout my district, I have personally seen that schools in this area are bursting at the seams, which ultimately leads to overcrowding in surrounding neighborhoods like Howard Beach. P.S. 146, for example, is overflowing with students who live in the Ozone Park area because this is their closest available option. P.S. 335 could also alleviate overcrowding in P.S. 63 and P.S. 108,” he said.
Addabbo Jr. told QNS that Howard Beach parents complain to him that their kids can’t go to school in Howard Beach because Ozone Park students are enrolled instead. He went on to say that there are even situations where two siblings go to different schools because there isn’t enough room for both of them in one.
“We’re not blessed with land in Queens. We’re living on top of each other so to find a place like this one, it may not be the optimal size, but it will address the issue of quality education in a crowded environment. It’s much needed and we can work with it,” he went on to say.
