A 25-year-old man smashed his car into a barrier on the Long Island Expressway this morning leading to his own death and those of his two passengers, as well as injuries to another 11 motorists.
Michael Fabre was speeding while going eastbound on the L.I.E. and lost control of his 2010 black Infinity sedan and crashed in to a barrier at around 4:20 am, according to police.
Upon impact, Fabre’s car split in two, sending the front half landing on the left lane of the eastbound lower roadway, where a 2012 Acura TI struck it near the Maurice Avenue exit in Maspeth.
Three of the occupants of the Infinity were pronounced dead at the scene, including Fabre from Oakland Gardens, 24-year-old Giovanny Sanchez of Brentwood, and 24-year-old Christina Formato of Franklin Square. There were two other passengers and they were transported to Elmhurst General Hospital, one in critical condition and one stable.
The man operating the Acura had minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene.
A second collision occurred when a dump truck could not stop in time from colliding in to five other cars that were stopped due to the first accident. All those involved in the second crash are in stable condition,
The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Unit is conducting an investigation in to the incident.
