Whether referred to as soccer or football, local residents will have the chance to meet one of the most legendary players of the game on Friday.
Frank Lampard, a famous English soccer player who now plays in the MLS for the New York City FC, will be dropping by Bar 43 at 43-06 43rd Street on Friday for a meet and greet.
The visit comes as a reward for Bar 43 being named one of New York City’s best soccer bars in a contest put on by the Daily Mail and Heineken. It allowed people to vote on bars throughout the city, and selected the four that received the most votes as winners.
Lampard will be popping in to Bar 43 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, though owner Nick Murphy suggested people arrive around 4, as he expects a full house.
“We’ve put a lot of work in to being a good soccer bar,” Murphy said. “We put in the work so it’s nice but not that surprising to be voted one of the best.”
Murphy said he was not sure exactly what the meet and greet would consist of, though he expected fans to be able to meet and take pictures with Lampard.
Murphy added that if there is not a game on Friday night, the bar will likely screen highlights from Lampard’s career.
Lampard is best known for his career with Chelsea Football Club in London, where he played for 13 seasons, during which he was named Chelsea’s player of the year three times. Prior to joining Chelsea, he played for West Ham United for four years.
Lampard was also capped 106 times for England.
In 2014, Lampard signed on to play as a midfielder for the New York City Football Club, which officially began play in 2015. He has played to mixed reviews in the United States, but helped the team finish the season on a high note, scoring a hat trick against the Colorado Rapids.
