A restaurant that combines Hawaiian cuisine with Asian spices opened in Hunters Point last week.
PokeLICious, located at 5-37 51st Ave, takes over the space that was occupied by the Beer Closet and offers poke, a Hawaiian dish consisting of raw fish and Asian influenced seasonings.
The restaurant is owned by Sam Kim and Katie Kim (no relation) who currently run Korean Style Fried Chicken out of Bricktown Bagel at 51-06 Vernon Boulevard at night. They have operated that eatery for about a year.
Katie Kim, who has lived in Hunters Point for the past five years, said that pokeLICious offers residents a healthy option, especially compared to KSFC.
The dishes pokeLICious offers primarily consist of a rice or mixed salad base, topped with raw fish and items such as wasabi, green onions, cucumber and pineapple (see menu below).
The restaurant can seat between 30 and 40 people and is currently open between 11:30 am and 8pm seven days a week.
The Beer Closet has not gone completely away, Katie said, since the restaurant will be selling its beer at night.
The Beer Closet’s signage will remain.
However, there are plans to move KSFC down from the Bricktown Bagel location to pokeLICious in February and switch the menu over to KSFC at night. The evening hours for that venture have not yet been determined.
“We plan to offer wings and beer,” Katie said. “We’re excited.”
