A man was fatally shot at Queensbridge Houses Monday after getting into an argument with two men, according to police.
Police were called out to 41-10 Vernon Boulevard at 4:45 pm after receiving a 911 call that a man had been shot. Upon their arrival, they found Javares Batts, 38, of Woodside, with gunshot wounds to the chest and torso area.
Batts died early Tuesday morning at NY Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital.
His death was the first murder at Queensbridge Houses, the country’s largest public housing complex, in nearly two years.
Batts had a history of violence and was a Bloods member who went by the nickname “Face,” reported the Daily News.
Just moments before his death, he allegedly got into an argument with a man known as “Animal.”
The Daily News reported that after their argument, “Animal” went into a building and returned with a second man. They both came out shooting at Batts.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
In March 2000, Batts killed a 21-year-old man outside the Queensbridge Houses. He served 10 years for manslaughter. He was convicted of weapons possession in August 2015 and was released in October.
