A major throughway between Astoria and Long Island City has been fully resurfaced.
Councilmen Costa Constantinides and Jimmy Van Bramer announced today that the stretch of 21st Street between Broadway and 47th Avenue has been completely milled and resurfaced and that the bumpy ride along the 20-block stretch is over.
The roadway has a reputation for being hazardous, known for its gaping potholes and cracks. For residents who live along the stretch, the battered roadway has brought noise, with trucks thumping over pot holes. Meanwhile, pedestrians have also had difficultly crossing the street as they have had to navigate the holes.
“See the repaving of the 21st Street come to fruition is a win for our community,” Constantinides said, adding that about 1,000 cars traverse the street per hour. “Since my first day in office, residents had expressed deep concern and frustration with the condition of the roadway.”
Meanwhile, Van Bramer said that the street is now much safer. “I am thrilled that drivers, pedestrians and cyclists no longer need to be terrified of unpredictable and unsafe roads up and down 21st Street.”
