The city will mend two aging overpasses in Whitestone in 2018, according to a local lawmaker.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) will repair the Cross Island Parkway overpasses at 147th and 150th Streets, state Senator Tony Avella said. The repairs are currently in the design phase and work is scheduled to begin in 2018.
The local lawmaker wrote to state and city DOT in May after noticing large chunks of the 150th Street foundation wall had fallen near the roadside.
NYC DOT’s Division of Bridges later examined the locations and scheduled them for repair.
A DOT spokesperson said both bridges are safe for vehicular and pedestrian use and recently underwent structural inspections conducted every two years.
“The anticipated capital contract will address damage to the bridges caused by crashes on local roads as well as deteriorated underdeck areas and other substandard features,” the spokesperson said. “The contract will result in the restoration of the structures to a state of good repair.”
“The foundation wall of these bridges has been in disrepair for years,” Avella said. “However, recent storms have worsened the condition of the wall creating a dangerous situation for motorists. This is a good first step in beginning the repair of our city’s continuously crumbling infrastructure and I am glad that DOT inspected these locations before more damage occurred.”
