The city’s war against virus-carrying mosquitoes will find its way into northeast Queens tomorrow morning.
Starting at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, the Health Department will send in trucks to spray part of Auburndale, Bayside, Bay Terrace, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, Little Neck and Oakland Gardens. The spraying will continue until 6 a.m. the following morning.
In case of inclement weather, the spraying will be rescheduled to Monday, Aug. 21, during the same hours.
According to the Health Department, the areas listed below have an increase in West Nile virus activity as well as high numbers of Culex mosquitoes, which have been known to transmit West Nile virus.
The spray zone is bordered by 166th Street to the west; Cross Island Parkway and Long Island Rail Road to the north; Little Neck Parkway, Marathon Parkway, Long Island Expressway and Little Neck Parkway to the east; and Union Turnpike, Cross Island Parkway, Long Island Expressway, Springfield Boulevard, Northern Boulevard, Corporal Kennedy Street, 26th Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard to the south.
The trucks will be spraying very low concentrations of Anvil® 10+10. When used properly, it poses no significant risks to human health. However, the Health Department advises that you stay indoors during the spraying.
Air conditioners can remain on, but to reduce the possibility of indoor exposure to pesticides, set the air conditioner vent to the closed position. Anything that is exposed to the spraying, including children’s toys, outdoor equipment, clothes and skin, should be washed thoroughly with soap and water after exposure to the spray.
