Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fundraiser at MoMA PS1

MoMA PS1’s Klaus Biesenbach and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer are set to host a relief fundraiser for Hurricane Maria recovery in Puerto Rico at the site of the contemporary art museum in Long Island City.
The event will take place on Oct. 4 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., where attendees can connect with people behind the relief efforts on the island and help raise money for the Hurricane Maria Community Relief and Recovery Fund, a grassroots fund supporting the island’s most vulnerable communities.
“One hundred percent of monies raised will be used to support immediate relief, recovery, and equitable rebuilding in Puerto Rico for the communities hit hardest by the storm,” reads part of the Hurricane Maria Community Recovery Fund site.
Members of the event’s host committee include Ricky Martin, Lady Gaga, Patti Smith, and James Franco, along with figures in business and the arts.
Councilmember Van Bramer says everyone has a responsibility to support Puerto Rico, especially in light of the way the White House has responded to the crisis, with some criticizing the administration’s speed and attention to the island.
“These are Americans citizens that are our brothers and sisters,” Van Bramer said. “And there’s a very special relationship between the island and New York City in particular.”
There will be a minimum donation of $20 at the event. Donations are also encouraged to be made directly to the Maria Fund via their website.
MoMA PS1 is also accepting supplies and donations on-site during regular museum hours. In-demand items include solar powered chargers, radios, batteries, and headlamps.
