Under a rainy sky, 52,000 — more or less — people in sneakers and short pants jogged through Queens on their way to Manhattan.
Thousands more lined the streets for the 47th edition of the New York City Marathon, clanking cow bells and yelling out encouragement to runners who’d written their names in Magic Marker on their jerseys.
The course through Queens covers barely two of the race’s 26.2 miles. But it takes the runners over the section of Vernon Boulevard choked with restaurants and bars, through a sparsely populated warehouse district along 40th Street and then up and over the Queensborough Bridge into Manhattan.
In the wake of a terror attack in downtown Manhattan that killed eight bicyclists earlier in the week, security was ratcheted up for the race. Sand trucks were parked at key intersections and an occasional National Guard soldier carrying automatic weapons was spotted in doorways and on corners along the way.
