For the sixth year in a row, food lovers will be able to sample momos from a variety of Jackson Heights restaurants as part of the Momo Crawl.
Jeff Orlick started the first Momo Crawl in 2012 when 30 of his friends and family perused Jackson Heights restaurants to get a taste of this traditional delicacy. The crawl attracts hundreds of people each year and at the end of the event participants votes for their favorite restaurant. The winner this year will receive a Championship Momo Belt.
This year, the crawl will take place on Nov. 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. Participants will meet at Diversity Plaza on 37th Road between 74th and 75th Streets and must purchase a Momo Crawl passport for $10 at momocrawl.com. Only 1,000 passports were made so the remaining participants will receive a map instead.
According to organizers, more than 20 restaurants will be selling the Himalayan dumplings for $1.
Attendees can travel to each restaurant by foot or trolley and will also be treated to music and dance performances by Yeshi Khando, Lotus, Dendi Sherpa and much more.
There will also be free momo henna by SamArt and free tattoos provided by Mohan’s Tattoo Inn. The wining restaurant will be determined by popular vote and will be announced at 4:30.
Proceeds from the event will go to Students for a Free Tibet, a nonprofit that advocates for the independence of Tibet from China.
