A defaced Veterans memorial at a Woodside park was cleared of graffiti yesterday by a non-profit group and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer.
The Veterans Memorial at John Vincent Daniels Jr. Square, located along Roosevelt Ave. between 51st and 52nd Streets, was vandalized with orange-colored lettering over the weekend. The memorial and square honor Daniels, a Woodside resident who was killed in action in 1918 during World War I.

“The defamation of a monument to those who have served our country is a disgrace that I will not accept,” said Council Member Van Bramer. “The minute a constituent reached out to my office and alerted me to the situation, I made sure this monument was cleaned and restored as quickly as possible.”
Fedcap, a non-profit that helps people overcome barriers to employment, dispatched members of their joint-Wildcat program to help clear the graffiti off the memorial.
The entire brick square itself, officially named Vincent Daniels Square in 1933, was also cleaned up during yesterday’s efforts.
