Firefighters working to control the fire at 50-68 47th St. this morning.

A fire consumed part of a Woodside house this morning as firefighters worked to bring the flames under control.
Firefighters began responding to the incident at 50-68 47th St., the site of a private two-story home, just after 11 a.m. Several firefighters at the scene said the flames originated from the back of the home, the only portion of the home that is visibly charred. A car at the back of the home was also destroyed by the fire.

An FDNY EMS worker at the scene said all the people in the private dwelling got out safely.

Maria Calbo, 65, lives in the first floor of the home and said the entire two-family home was occupied by members of her extended family. Tears streamed down her face as she watched multiple firefighters drown her home with gallons of water.
Calbo said her mother, her sister, and herself were the only ones home this morning. Her elderly mother, however, had left the home well before the fire started to run an errand. “God knows what he’s doing,” she said.
Michelle H., a family member who lives just blocks away and who did not want to give her full name, ran to the home on the corner of 47th Street and Laurel Hill Boulevard as soon as she heard of the fire.
“My whole family lives there,” Michelle, 28, said as she listed her grandmother, aunt, uncle, and cousins.

Michelle added that the family had several pets, including a ferret, living at the home. As the firefighters worked to control the fire, Michelle said that two cats and one small dog were missing.
By 12:04 p.m., the fire was under control. An hour later, over seven firetrucks from Engine 325/Ladder 163 in Woodside, Engine 259/Ladder 128 and Engine 258/Ladder 115 in Long Island City, and from several other firehouses, had left the scene.
The Sunnyside Post has reached out to the FDNY headquarters for more information and is awaiting response.
