A modern Italian restaurant that opened in Sunnyside last November has released a spring menu and is offering a special prix fixe dinner this Wednesday.

Senso Unico, located at 43-04 47th Ave, launched its seasonal menu this month and plans to continue making timely updates to its food and drink options.

“We like to do seasonal menus, and now that spring is here, we will be serving lighter dishes and vegetables that are in season,” said Vincenzo Garofalo, a co-owner and chef.

Squid Ink Maccaronara

Such dishes on the restaurant’s lunch and dinner menu include the Mortadella Meatball, with spinach and pistachio pesto; the Squid Ink Maccaronara, with cuttlefish sugo, peas and saffron cream; and the Chicken Cacciatora, which consists of half roasted chicken, bell pepper, olives and tomato sauce.

“I like to play on the classical recipes and put our own touch on them,” Garofalo said. “We try many new things until we perfect the recipe and find the ones that we think that customers will like.”

Residents will be able to try some of these items at a special four course prix fixe event the restaurant is offering this Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m.

The dishes on offer will be mozzarella with baby arugula, tomatoes, melon and crispy prosciutto paired with Il Grillo Prosecco Brut from Santa Teresa, Sicily.

Mortadella Meatball will be served as a second course, paired with a 2016 Chardonnay Salento from Cantele, Puglia. This will be followed by Fusilli Avellinesi with sausages, cherry tomatoes, mushroom and truffle sauce, paired with a 2015 Primitivo Salento.

Finally for desert, a “Beermisu” will be served paired with a 2017 Nero D’avola Rose from Purato, Sicily

“We will have a person on staff to describe each course and their pairings, and we hope the entire community will come out to expand their palate,” Garofalo said.

The four course meal will cost $55 per person, and reservations must be made in advance by calling (347) 662-6101 or by visiting the restaurant.

In addition to the event and new dinner items, Senso Unico has also opened its doors for brunch on weekends, expanding its hours of operation.

“We started to do brunch because people have asked for it since we opened,” said co-owner and wife Laura Garofalo. “We saw that Sunnyside had a big brunch crowd and we would like to cater to that.”

Brunch items include the Cornetto, their spin on green eggs and ham, served on an open face croissant up, broccoli rabe, and crispy prosciutto.

They also will be offering Uova in Camicia, which consists of two poached eggs all’Amatriciana, with smoked pancetta and tomato sauce.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Granola Pizza made of vanilla mascarpone and mixed berries has a unique twist on traditional pizza that the owners believe will delight many diners.

“People have been very receptive since we opened, and they have been open to trying new things,” Laura said “We even offer different specials every day so it’s nice that they get to try something that’s off the menu.”
