Gap’s Steinway Street location is being converted into an outlet store, which will open in late July a Gap spokesperson said Tuesday.
The Gap location at 31-48 Steinway St. closed on May 15 and is being remodeled and converted into a Gap Factory store.
Clothing sold in Gap Factory shops is made specifically for the outlet stores, and is typically less expensive and of lower quality than the main store.
The nearest regular Gap store is now located at the Queens Center Mall at 90-15 Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst.
Gap Inc., which also controls Banana Republic, Athleta, Old Navy as well as its namesake, Gap, announced plans to close 200 “underperforming” Gap retail stores in Sept. 2017, while opening 270 Athleta and Old Navy stores.
Gap stores are believed to have been adversely affected by the popularity of online retail, as well as “fast-fashion” stores like Forever 21.
