One of the signs on the Sunnyside Arch came down this morning in preparation for long-overdue repairs to the lights on the structure.
Sunnyside Shines, the name of the local BID, posted a photo to Instagram just before midday today of one of the ‘Sunnyside’ signs suspended in midair as it was hoisted off the arch.
This sign will be used as a template to cut out brand new ‘Sunnyside’ signs, the BID said, for both sides of the Arch. The new signs will be outfitted with energy efficient and durable LED lights and installed in the coming weeks.
Upgraded LED lights will also replace the current lighting outlining the actual structure.
The sign weighs several hundred pounds, said Jaime-Faye Bean, Sunnyside Shines Executive Director.
The upgrades to the Sunnyside Arch’s lights come after Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer announced $15,000 in funding towards the improvements in October. The funding covers a hefty portion of the $17,000 expected to renovate the arch’s lighting system with digital LED Lights.
The neon lights on the art-deco arch were installed in 2011, but went down last year. The arch has been a symbol of Sunnyside since it was erected in 1983.
