Macys 4th Of July Fireworks (via Macy’s)

Macy’s 4th of July fireworks are returning to the East River for a fourth year in a row this summer.
Macy’s made the announcement today, noting that more than 3,000 shells and effects will be launched per minute from seven barges between 23rd and 42nd Streets in midtown on the River, meaning the show will be on full display from Long Island City and western Queens.
The 25-minute show will begin at around 9:25 p.m.
“Macy’s Fireworks continue to grow in artistry, as we ignite the night for the nation’s premiere Independence Day celebration,” said Susan Tercero, executive producer of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, in a statement.
Macy’s says this year’s display will be “one for the record books”, and is expected to be viewed by more than 3 million live spectators and over 12 million television viewers nationwide.
The fireworks will go off to the score of patriotic songs played by the West Point Band and Glee Club, with a performance of “God Bless America” from Kelly Clarkson. The song celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
Macy’s has held the fireworks show since 1976, making this year the 42nd edition of the pyrotechnic display. More than 75,000 shells and effects will decorate the night sky, with designs like neon pinwheels, pulsing hearts, swirling water fountains, and more.
“I’m thrilled that once again the greatest fireworks show in the country will be viewable to all of Western Queens!” Council Member Van Bramer said. “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks show is a national event and it’s great to have it based right here in Long Island City along our waterfront for all to enjoy!”
The fireworks were moved to the Hudson River in 2009, but returned to the East River in 2015. Macy’s has used Hunters Point South Park as a staging area for the showcase and a private viewing in past years, resulting in the park being closed off to the public that day.
The 108th Precinct confirmed that Hunters Point South Park will be closed for the event this year, with Gantry Plaza State Park remaining open to the public as in prior years.
