Registered Democrats in the neighborhoods of Sunnyside and Woodside voted for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in yesterday’s primary by a huge margin over incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley.
The Board of Elections broke down the results for the 14th Congressional District by Assembly and election district.
In the portion of Assembly District 37 that is part of Congressional District 14– namely Sunnyside, Woodside and sections of Long Island City– Ocasio-Cortez pulled in 1,929 votes compared to Crowley’s 868 votes.

The votes in Assembly District 37 came from about 20 election districts largely comprising Sunnyside and Woodside blocks.
Furthermore, a little over half of Assembly District 37’s results were in Sunnyside’s 11104 zip code. The zip code churned out roughly 1,300 votes for Ocasio-Cortez, with 520 votes for Crowley.
In a number of blocks covering part of the Woodside 11377 area within Assembly District 37, roughly 400 votes were cast for Ocasio-Cortez. Crowley, on the other hand, received about 200 votes from Woodsiders in this Assembly District.
In addition, Ocasio-Cortez beat out Crowley in every single election district within Assembly District 37, based on scanner data from the city.
In total, the Assembly District saw a total of 2,804 votes cast, including seven write-ins.
Pundits say Ocasio-Cortez’ victory over Crowley, regarded as the boss of the Queens political machine, will send reverberations through the political landscape on a city, state, and federal level by either ousting establishment Democrats or forcing incumbents to lean more to the left to stay on.
Assembly District 37, represented by Catherine Nolan, is no exception to the reverberations. The Assemblymember has represented the district since 1985, and endorsed Crowley during this Democratic primary.
Nolan’s office did not return a request for comment on Ocasio-Cortez’ win and the way residents of her district voted.
