Sunnyside’s Biriyani House has closed, and will instead be the site of a new Indian restaurant with different ownership.
Cardamom, the name of the new restaurant, will take over the 43-45 43rd St. locale, and is set to open on Aug. 27, according to Alwyn Gudinho, the owner.
Gudinho, 40, says his restaurant will serve authentic Indian food along with some dishes from Goa, his home state along India’s west coast.
Dishes, priced between $12 and $19, include xacutti (a curry made with multiple spices and prepared with chicken or lamb), vindaloo, lamb chops, chicken tikka masala, and a variety of seafood and vegan dishes. Home made Indian desserts will also be served.
Cardamom will be Gudinho’s first restaurant after working in the hospitality and restaurant industry for 20 years. He has worked in a variety of New York City Indian restaurants as a chef for the past 10 years, including Utsav in Midtown, Nirvana in Murray Hill, and even a brief stint at Saffron Garden on Skillman Avenue.
Prior to living in New York City, Gudinho worked in the Middle East and on cruise ships as a chef.
The name of the restaurant, he says, refers to the cardamom spice used widely in Indian cuisine, with the “mom” in the name as an nod to his mother and grandmother, who taught him how to cook.
