Astoria restaurant and bar The Shady Lady has reopened after being seized earlier this month by the New York State Department of Taxation.

The owners of American-style eatery announced their reopening on Facebook yesterday. The Shady Lady has operated since 2013 at 34-19 30th Ave.

A spokesperson for the Tax Department said today that the department returned the restaurant’s keys on Aug. 22 after seizing the storefront on Aug. 16.

The restaurant, at the time it was shut down, owed $374,494.37 in taxes dating back to 2016, a spokesperson for the Tax Department said on Aug. 17.

A spokesperson for the Tax Department would not provide additional details about the case.

The department considers seizing a business to be its last resort, the spokesperson said. The department typically contacts businesses repeatedly before seizing their facilities.

The Shady Lady’s owners did not respond to a request for comment by the time this article was published.
