P.S. 150, the elementary school with more than 1,000 students on 43rd Avenue, will soon have a revamped auditorium thanks to thousands of dollars in funding recently secured for the project, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer announced yesterday.
The school will be receiving $400,000 for the long-awaited renovation work, which has been included into the city’s fiscal year 2019 budget.
Van Bramer took to the school yesterday to celebrate news of the funding with performances from the school band and chorus.
“An auditorium is a place for a school and its community to come together, whether it’s for student performances, PTA meetings or educational assemblies,” Van Bramer said in a statement. “The dedication and talent I’ve seen from the students and teachers of PS 150 is a testament to the importance of renovating this essential space.”
The funding for auditorium renovations stems from the most recent round of participatory budgeting. While the project did not receive enough votes to be funded, it did have many supporters.
P.S. 150 is currently working with the School Construction Authority to figure out what renovations can be done with the allocated money.
Apart from an auditorium revamp, the school is also set to receive $100,000 for technology upgrades including laptop carts, desktop computers, and interactive boards.
“Our school excels in the arts,” said Carmen Parache, P.S. 150 principal. “To have a renovated auditorium only confirms to staff and students that our work is important and meaningful. Our students will be performing on a professional stage.”
