The classic Disney fairytale Sleeping Beauty is coming to Flushing Town Hall in February with a whimsical twist performed with Chinese subtitles as part of the venue’s Lunar New Year event series.

Flushing Town Hall will delight audiences with renowned storyteller David Gonzalez’ production of Sleeping Beauty on Saturday, Feb. 16, joined by pianist Daniel Kelly, who has been called “stunningly original” with “a visionary imagination.”

Gonzalez’ rhymed-verse spin includes live music and image projections, creating a magical multi-media world. Drawing musical inspiration from Bach, paired with original visuals and Chinese subtitles, the story focuses on the story of a beautiful princess awakened by true love’s kiss (or not!).

In advance of the family performance, Gonzalez will lead a workshop on interactive storytelling. He will focus on four distinct elements of communication: language, voice, gesture, and imagination. The workshop will feature physical and vocal activities and an array of theater games, suited for children ages 5 and up.

A storyteller, musician, and writer, David Gonzalez is the creator of numerous plays and one-man shows including “The Boy Who Could Sing Pictures,” “The Frog Bride,” “Aesop Bops!,” “Maddog and Me,”and more. His ability to combine drama, music, and media captures audiences nationwide with stories of love, hope, and courage.

Gonzalez received a Lifetime Achievement Award from International Performing Arts for Youth, and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his original production of “The Frog Bride.” His shows have been presented at many of the best performing arts centers, theaters, and festivals in the U.S. and abroad.

The workshop will begin at 1:00 PM followed by the family performance at 2:15 PM. Tickets for the workshop are $8/$5 children/free for members and teens with tickets to 2:15 PM show (RSVP required); tickets for the family performance are $14/$10 members/$8 children/$6 member children/free for teens.
