Flushing Town Hall will celebrate its Winter-Spring 2019 season with an opening party featuring La Cumbiamba eNeYé, an eclectic and explosive group influenced by various Colombian musical traditions.
On Saturday, Jan. 26, after a 3 p.m. interactive arts workshop with instruments and dance, the band will perform music from Colombia’s coast with its full 10-piece orchestra at 4 p.m., and the concert will conclude with the season opening party and jam at 5:30 p.m.
La Cumbiamba eNeYé finds their inspiration from Colombia’s traditional styles and creates new arrangements and compositions, incorporating eclectic texture, harmony, and rhythm.
Initially, La Cumbiamba eNeYé’s began performing a repertoire of cumbia-related rhythms outdoors in different public areas of New York City. Cumbiamba is an outdoor celebration with live cumbia music, and La Cumbiamba eNeYé evokes this lively atmosphere with every performance. The group has performed at different cultural venues throughout the city and beyond.
La Cumbiamba eNeYé is led by Martín Vejarano, a Colombian multi-instrumentalists, performer, composer, and educator. Based in New York City since 2000 as a freelance musician and educator, Vejarano holds degrees in Jazz and Music Theory from the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory of Music and The City College of New York.
As an educator and Colombian music instructor, Vejarano has taught in the United States, South America, and Europe. He currently directs and leads four music projects: La Cumbiamba eNeYé, Chia’s Dance Party, Cumbia River Band, and NYC Gaita Club.
