An off-duty police officer who shot himself in the head inside his Middle Village home on Friday has died, according to reports.
The officer, identified as Nicholas Mencaroni, died shortly after he was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital on Jan. 25 from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police had responded to a 911 call in Middle Village at around 2:30 p.m., where they found the 41-year-old officer in critical condition.
The Daily News reports that the incident took place at the officer’s 69th Lane home near Juniper Boulevard.
