Construction is expected to begin this fall on a 3-story addition to the main school building at P.S. 2 in East Elmhurst.

The building will replace the beaten-up modular building that currently covers a portion of the school yard. The addition is expected to cater to about 120 of the 600 students who attend the 75-10 21st Ave. school.

The modular building, which was meant to be a temporary fix, has been part of the school landscape for more than two decades. Twenty percent of the students at the school are taught in it.

The School Construction Authority, which is overseeing the project, expects the addition to be complete by September 2021. The addition will include four classrooms for either Pre-K or kindergarten, in addition to one standard classroom, art and music classrooms, and an exercise area.

Demolition permits for the modular building were filed in August 2018. Once construction starts, the modular building will be bulldozed and the students will be taught in the main school building for the duration of the project.

Plans for the addition were first announced in Oct. 2017 by local officials.
