Police are searching for a pair of burglars behind a string of break-ins in Astoria and Woodside dating back to late November, with more than $77,000 in jewelry stolen, along with electronics and thousands in cash.
The two thieves, who are believed to have stolen $77,000 in jewelry in three Astoria break-ins on Feb. 8, have since been connected to nine additional burglaries, police announced today.
One or both of the burglars first broke into a residence near 25th Ave and 42nd Street on Nov. 30 at around 9:30 a.m., where they forced open the front door and stole $200 in cash and electronics from the 27-year-old resident.
The duo then hit two homes near 45th Street and 30th Road on Jan. 11. The first break-in happened at 7:50 a.m. that day, and resulted in jewelry being stolen. The next burglary happened just 10 minutes later at 8 a.m., when the two ransacked a home belonging to a 75-year-old resident, but did not manage to steal any property.
The third break-in happened hours later at around 3:25 p.m., when the two forced opened the front door of a 35-year-old’s home near 48th Street and Broadway and stole jewelry from inside.
The pair returned three days later for more burglaries, this time heading to a 35-year-old man’s home by 41st Street and 30th Avenue. The thieves broke into the home at around 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 15, and stole 12 uncashed checks and about $2,700 in cash.
On Jan 31 at around 3 p.m., the duo forced their way into a 63-year-old woman’s home near 56th Street and 32nd Avenue by way of a rear window, eventually stealing jewelry and multiple uncased checks from the site.
Apart from the three Astoria break-ins on Feb. 8, the serial burglars also broke into area homes during three days in February, police said.
The two stole jewelry from a home near 46th Street and 34th Avenue after forcing open the front door at around midday on Feb. 13.
On Feb. 16, the burglars hit a 22-year-old woman’s residence in the vicinity of 43rd Street and 35th Avenue, where they stole electronics, jewelry and $700 in cash at around 3:15 p.m.
Last weekend—the latest incident on the list—the two attempted to break into a 47-year-old woman’s home by 43rd Street and 35th Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. by pushing in a window air conditioner. The victim, however, looked out her window, causing the thieves to flee.
The two suspects are both described as light-skinned and approximately 30 years old. One of the suspects is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weights about 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark jeans, white sneakers, and a hooded sweatshirt.
The second suspect is about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans, and white sneakers.
