Two local leaders to host rain barrel giveaway in Glendale next month

Two local lawmakers are teaming up with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to bring a rain barrel giveaway to Glendale in June.

State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblyman Mike Miller will co-host the event at Yeshiva Godolah Seminary, located at 74-10 88th St., from 10 a.m. to noon on June 8.

“When residents use these rain barrels to capture excess rainwater, it can have a major impact on our environment here in the city,” Addabbo said. “By using the stored rainwater for household tasks such as watering their garden or washing their car instead of regular tap water, residents not only preserve their drinking water, but they can also save some money on their water bills. I would like to thank Assemblyman Miller and DEP for continuing to partner with me on these great events, and I encourage everyone to register for a free rain barrel.”

The rain barrels attach to a home’s rain gutter to collect rainfall and store the excess water. The collected rainwater can then be used to complete tasks around the house rather than using fresh water.

“Every year Senator Addabbo and I co-sponsor a rain barrel event with DEP to help our constituents become more eco-friendly,” said Assemblyman Miller. “Collecting rainwater will conserve water and reduce the amount of surface pollutants.”

Those who preregister for a barrel can arrive at 10 a.m. to collect their barrel. Those who do not register can pick up a free rain barrel between noon and 1 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

To register for a free rain barrel, call Addabbo’s office at 718-738-1111 and leave your name and address. There is a limit of one rain barrel per household.
