A discount store has opened up on Queens Boulevard where South Pole was located for decades.
D&F Deal Discount Store, which opened at 44-04 Queens Blvd. Thursday, sells low cost items much like a 99 cent variety store. The store comes to the boulevard almost a year to the day after South Pole shut down.
Haiping Wang, the owner of the D&F and a Sunnyside resident, said that he co-owns five discount stores with various partners. This store, however, is his first where he is the sole owner.
D&F occupies the ground floor of the two story brick building, with Western Queens Consultation Center on the top floor.
South Pole had been located on the ground floor since the late 1970s, after the prior Robert Hall clothing store closed.

The family-owned company was founded in the 1960s by Jerry Grossfeld, and specialized in “merchandise recovery.”
Grossfeld, who had two sons, died in early 2017 at age 78 of cancer. The family ran North Pole in Corona, a similar business that also closed last year.
