A 29-year-old Sunnyside man who sent lewd pictures of himself via text to undercover cops posing as a young boy was arrested Thursday for sex-related crimes.
Frederick Scheinin, according to federal investigators, sent photos of his erect penis through a video messaging app to the officers—who he thought was a 14-year-old boy.
Scheinin, who worked as an investigator with the DEA, allegedly asked the “boy” on several occasions between October 2019 and January 2020 for pictures of his genitals.
On Dec. 20, according to the charges, Scheinin sent pictures of his penis via the app to the “boy” and wrote:
“Let me see yours. I promise not to judge if that’s what you’re nervous about. I don’t care about size…If I send you another one maybe that will change your mind.”
The pair, the feds alleged, also chatted via video on a different occasion, where Scheinin exposed himself and masturbated while trying to convince the 14-year-old to do the same.
Scheinin, according to the charges, also invited the “boy,” who said he lived with his parents in Whitestone, to his Sunnyside apartment—asking him if he was familiar with the 7 train.
Police nabbed Scheinin after he arranged to meet the “boy,” where the defendant was to show up with condoms and a lubricant for sex. Police intercepted him at the designated location with the paraphernalia and arrested him.
Scheinin has been charged with one count of attempted production of child pornography, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison; and one count of attempted enticement of a minor, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Scheinin worked at the New York Field office of the DEA up until his arrest Thursday.
“As a diversion investigator at the DEA, Frederick Scheinin’s foremost responsibility was to protect the public from illegally diverted drugs,” said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman for the Southern District of New York. “Instead of fulfilling this worthy mission, Scheinin allegedly spent months attempting to prey on a 14-year-old boy. This arrest exemplifies that no one is above the law.”
He was ordered held on $100,000 bond in federal court Friday.
