The Shops at Skyview Center in Flushing is shining a light on food insecurity in Queens in honor of September’s Hunger Action Month.

Throughout the month, the shopping center is hosting The Giving Table, a food donation drive which will benefit the Cultural Food Pantry hosted by Queens Museum and La Jornada

Wesley Sin, marketing manager at ShopCore Properties, said their corporate philanthropic initiative is fighting hunger, as they’re dedicated to eliminating the growing problem of childhood hunger by feeding young bodies and minds through CoreGiving.

“We are honored to team up with noteworthy local partners like La Jornada and the Queens Museum to collect donations from the community to combat childhood hunger in Queens. We believe that no child should experience hunger and its negative effects,” Sin said.

Positioned near the Skyview entrance, the Giving Table offers a convenient drop-off for shoppers to donate non-perishable food items to give back to the local community.

“The Giving Table is a powerful visual representation of one in six children in the United States who go hungry,” Sin said. “A striking orange table with six chairs will be strategically placed at the center’s main entrance. The sixth chair will be white, showcasing a stark fact — that every sixth child experiences some form of food insecurity.”

On Friday, Sept. 23, the center will host ‘Feed the Plate,’ an educational craft-based event to educate children about nutrition, hunger, and food insecurity through hands-on activities such as complimentary kids coloring and arts and crafts.

Participants will also have the opportunity to donate non-perishable food items during the event while watching a live art installation by artist Niceli Portugal, who also serves as support coordinator for the Cultural Food Pantry.

For the event, Portugal and fellow food pantry volunteers will explore ways to connect with food and fight hunger while embracing the diversity across Queens, providing resources, information and encouraging the community to open space for art in their lives.
