Bethpage Federal Credit Union celebrated the soft opening of its first Queens location Monday at 47-21 Queens Blvd. in Sunnyside. This is expected to be the first of multiple Bethpage Federal Credit Union locations opening across the borough over the next year. The grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 14.
According to Bethpage Federal Credit Union Senior Vice President of Retail Banking Emilio Cooper, this location in Sunnyside was decided upon about a year-and-a-half ago. He credited the large amount of traffic in the area as a key factor in making this the first Queens location.
“Sunnyside is a very attractive neighborhood that we felt would be a fantastic place to add value to the community,” Cooper said. “This particular location is right on the corner of a very busy intersection, across the street from the 7 train. They have parking underneath the elevated line. We just thought it was going to be a phenomenal opportunity to improve that corner. We know the neighborhood is really excited for the improvement that adding our branch has made.”
In addition to the Sunnyside location, Bethpage Federal Credit Union intends to officially open another location at 102-20 Atlantic Ave. in Ozone Park. Cooper said a third location in Forest Hills is expected to open sometime in 2024.
Another thing Cooper noted was that the vendor selected for constructing the new Sunnyside branch, Financial Supermarkets Inc., built it mostly using recycled materials.
Cooper emphasized the importance of having good leadership for the branch in Sunnyside, leading to Adnan Khan being selected as the branch manager. Cooper highlighted Khan’s familiarity and experience with the Queens marketplace.
“This is all about community,” Khan said. “There’s a lot of working-class families and small businesses. I have no doubt in my mind that we’ll be thriving in no time with help from the community.”
In addition to the three employees who will be stationed at this location, Khan said there will also be floaters, resulting in at least five on hand at any given time.
“I will always be remembered as the manager of the very first branch in Queens,” Khan said. “I’m super excited and looking forward to really helping the community [and] going over different ways they can save and make money.”
