A charity bowling event will be hosted at Jib Lanes in Flushing on Saturday, Oct. 28, to raise money for Memorial Sloan Kettering, the cancer treatment and research institution, and to honor the memory of award-winning news anchor Ruschell Boone, who died last month.
This will be the second annual “Strike for a Cure” event, which is presented by NYPD Community Affairs in partnership with Municipal Credit Union.
NYPD Officer Genecea Johnson co-founded Strike for a Cure last year with NYPD Detective Patrick Blanc and emphasized the importance of raising funds as well as the public’s awareness of cancer.
“This fundraiser is important in order to raise awareness of the importance of early detection of breast and other types of cancer,” Johnson said.
Johnson and Blanc work in NYPD Community Affairs and, over the years, they became close with Boone, who covered many of their community outreach events as a reporter for NY1.
As a reporter with NY1 for 20 years, Ruschell was a much loved and important member of her local community.
She spoke publicly about her battle with cancer in order to help others, and was in attendance and honored at the inaugural event. She was planning to participate in this year’s event before her death on Sept. 3, 2023.
“We had a close relationship with Ruschell Boone, and we are proud to honor her valiant fight while having a great time bowling and raising awareness of the importance of early detection,” Blanc said. “Jib Lanes is big on community engagement and initiatives and they have been very supportive in helping us with our event again this year.”
General Manager of Jib Lanes Marlon Enriquez said that he is delighted the venue has been chosen once again to host Strike for a Cure.
“We are thrilled to once again host Strike for a Cure at Jib Lanes and to help spread the vital message that early detection of cancer helps to save lives,” he said. “As part of the Queens community, we are proud to partner with community groups on various causes that benefit community members. We look forward to a great day of bowling on Oct. 28!”
Tickets for the event cost $40 per person, which includes bowling shoes and unlimited bowling for two hours. The event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone who wishes to sign up can do so by clicking here.
