The number of reported rape and burglary cases across Queens dropped for the 28-day period from Jan. 15 to Feb. 11, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD Monday. Meanwhile, the statistics show that robberies trended upward during that period.
Over the course of the 28-day period, reported rape cases in northern Queens dropped 46.7%, from 15 in 2023 to eight in 2024. Burglaries went down 26.3%, from 194 to 143. Robberies, on the other hand, increased 11.2%, from 143 to 159.
The 108th Precinct, which covers Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside, had the most significant decline in reported rape cases in northern Queens during the 28-day period, from three in 2023 to none in 2024.
Burglaries decreased the most in northern Queens’ 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace. The number was down 47%, from 64 last year to 34 this year.
Meanwhile, the 115th Precinct, which covers Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst and North Corona, had the biggest increase in robberies across northern Queens. Cases there went up from 14 to 27.
In southern Queens, reported rapes dropped 30% during the 28-day period, from 10 last year to seven this year. Burglaries decreased 22.2%, from 72 to 56. Robberies ended up rising 37%, from 81 to 111.
The 101st Precinct, which covers Far Rockaway and Bayswater, had the biggest drop in reported rape cases across southern Queens. Cases there dropped from two in 2023 to zero this year.
The 106th Precinct, which covers Howard Beach, Lindenwood and Ozone Park, had the deepest drop in burglaries across southern Queens. Cases there went down from 11 to three. However, the precinct also experienced the biggest jump in robberies, from 14 last year to 24 this year.
The total number of reported major crimes – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle thefts – was mostly flat across northern Queens and experienced a slight increase in southern Queens. In northern Queens, the total number of major crimes ended up decreasing 0.65% during the 28-day period, from 1,225 in 2023 to 1,217 this year. Meanwhile, southern Queens experienced a 3.73% increase, from 750 to 778.
