The number of rapes throughout Queens remained up during the 28-day period from Feb. 23 to Mar. 24, compared to the same time period last year, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD Monday. In northern Queens, robberies had a large increase, while grand larcenies declined sharply.
Over the course of the 28-day period, reported rape cases in northern Queens increased 33.3%, from 15 in 2023 to 20 in 2024. Robberies also had a large increase in northern Queens, rising 37% from 119 to 163. Grand larcenies, on the other hand, went down 9.7% in northern Queens, from 507 to 458.
Six of the eight police precincts in northern Queens experienced an increase in rape cases over the 28-day period. The 104th Precinct, which covers Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village, had the biggest increase, from none last year to three this year.
The 110th Precinct, which oversees Corona and Elmhurst, experienced the largest jump in reported robberies. Cases there went up from 26 in 2023 to 42 in 2024.
The 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace, had the steepest decline in grand larcenies over the 28-day period. Reported cases there fell from 114 in 2023 to 94 in 2024.
Southern Queens also experienced a notable increase in rape cases during the 28-day period compared to the previous year. Rapes rose 90% there, from 10 in 2023 to 19 in 2024. The 105th Precinct, which covers Bellerose, Cambria Heights, Glen Oaks, Laurelton and Queens Village, experienced the most significant increase in reported cases over this span, from none last year to three this year.
The total number of reported major crimes – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle thefts – rose across the borough during the 28-day period, compared to the same time last year. Major crimes in northern Queens rose 6.34%, from 1,135 in 2023 to 1,207 in 2024. In southern Queens, major crimes went up 2.24%, from 759 last year to 776 this year.
During the 28-day period in 2023, Queens reported a total of 1,894 incidents. In the same period in 2024, the total rose to 1,983 incidents, marking a 4.70% increase.
